Mobilising Sustainable Finance to Halt and Reverse Nature Loss

Vivien Teu contributed as one of the co-authors to the HKGFA Nature Finance report – “Mobilising Sustainable Finance to Halt and Reverse Nature Loss” – a timely release following recent COP30 referred to as “Nature COP”. From considering policy and regulatory drivers in the role of frameworks on sustainable finance practices, highlighting dependency risks along with ecosystem services and nature-based solutions as opportunities, to showcasing nature-related financing approaches and case studies, this offers a comprehensive overview on the latest thinking and leading sustainable finance transactions on nature.

Sustainable Finance for nature should be science-based, strategic and purposeful with intentionality on specific sustainability or impact goals (including avoiding negative harm) – beyond conservation, to restore, regenerate and leverage nature-based solutions for humanity and biodiversity to thrive, climate and nature considerations and frameworks need to be integrated and become an integral part of financial systems. With growing adoption of TNFD and anticipated nature-related disclosures under ISSB S3, the market should be prepared, and not only wait for regulations to future-proof. There are already many standards and frameworks to guide, as outlined in the report’s chapter on pathways to biodiversity-informed financial decisions.

With its ecological as well as capital market significance, HongKong has unique opportunities to lead in nature finance and be a centre for Asia, while we are delighted to have had the chance to share also on Malaysia’s national policy as one of the top 12 biodiversity-rich countries and on details of the key questions and criteria of the environmental objective on protection of healthy ecosystem and biodiversity EO3 and DNSH Standard of the ASEAN Taxonomy.
